How to choose an electric fence setup
An electric fence is only as good as its energizer and grounding. Size the charger to the length of fence and the animal you're holding - goats and sheep need a stronger pulse than horses or cattle.
Solar energizers remove the need for power at the paddock. Pair the fence with self-latching gate hardware and a reliable water setup so the whole paddock runs without daily fixes.
Size by joules, not miles
Box miles are optimistic. Look at output joules and pick one step above what you think you need.
Ground it properly
Most fence problems are poor grounding. Use at least three ground rods, 10 ft apart.
Test weekly
A fence tester shows voltage along the line so you find shorts before the animals do.
Common questions
What voltage do I need for goats?
Aim for at least 4,000-6,000 volts on the line for goats and sheep.
Will a solar charger work in winter?
Yes, if the panel faces south and the battery is sized for several cloudy days.
