How to set up a coop that runs itself
A backyard flock is easy until you're the one who has to be home at dusk every night. The right coop gear takes the daily lockup, feeding and watering off your schedule and keeps predators out while you sleep.
Size everything to your flock: most feeders and waterers are rated by bird count, and an automatic door needs enough opening height for your largest breed. Plan for winter early - frozen water is the number-one cold-weather problem.
Light sensor or timer?
Light-sensor doors follow the seasons on their own. Timer doors are more predictable if you have a late roaster.
Stop feed waste
Treadle and port feeders keep rats and wild birds out of the feed and can cut waste by a third.
Heat the water, not the coop
A heated base or waterer keeps water liquid; heating the whole coop adds fire risk and is rarely needed.

Will an automatic door keep predators out?
Yes, when it closes fully and locks. Choose a door with a gravity or locking slide so raccoons can't lift it.
How many hens per feeder?
A 20 lb feeder covers about 6-10 hens for a week. For larger flocks, add a second feeding station.
